What is Primary Prevention?

Prevail's prevention team focuses on how our community can move from reacting to violence, to stopping it from ever happening in the first place.
We believe domestic and sexual violence is a public health issue that can be prevented through environmental, social, and systematic change. Primary prevention—preventing violence before it happens—focuses on reducing risk factors (things that make violence more likely to occur) and increasing protective factors (things that make violence less likely to occur) with the goal of creating protective environments.
